19 Stars: Quilts of Indiana's Past and Present

I had the opportunity to do a little sneak peek of the 19 Stars: Quilts of Indiana’s Present and Past at the Indiana State Museum this last weekend.  I took Jonesy with me because Babies Love Quilts yes?

Anyhow the exhibit is part of Indiana’s Bicentennial celebration (did you know Indiana will be 200 next year?).   It features vintage quilts as well as contemporary (sadly no Indianapolis Modern Quilt Guild members had quilts in the exhibit).  The exhibit features 19 stars as Indiana was the 19th State of the Union.

Let’s start first with the contemporary side of the exhibit – these quilts while they are masterpieces in their own right.  Surprisingly most of these were not my cup of tea.  I prefer quilts that can be functional in my home rather than hung solely on a wall.   Many of these were what I would call art quilts with very intricate piecing and unique fabrics and detailed quilting.  Regardless they were still beautiful and you can appreciate the craftsmanship and artistic ability of their creators.   Here are a few snaps I captured of the Contemporary  Side of the exhibit.

The vintage quilts however were amazing!  I was surprised at how much I was drawn to the Vintage pieces.  I could see similarities to these quilts and quilts shown at show and tell and IMQG Meetings.  A few of them I said to myself  “Rachael will want to hack this” (Rachael being an IMQG member who often likes to hack patterns).  They were beautiful, intricately pieced, many by hand.  And they are persevered so beautifully that you can’t really tell they are 100+ years old.    Anyhow here are some snaps from the Vintage side of the exhibit.

Check out this feathering?  And quilting.  Holy Cow!

 Ombre Anyone?
And what about some of these vintage prints?

Shout out for Indy Modern Quilt Guild - Indiana State Museum if you want to have an exhibit of AMAZING Indiana Modern quilts anytime soon get in touch – I know so people. LOL.

The exhibit is on the 3rd floor of the Indiana State Museum and is included with museum admission.  I think admission $12 or $13/person (Jones sized babies are free) but the first Tuesday of the Month is ½ Price if you are a deal finder.  It’s also worth taking a peek at the Bill Foley Exhibit which I also loved.

Around Here & There Everywhere

Around here ...
I'm pretty much showing up ill-prepared for situations.
I'm itching to make something.
I'm realizing that I pretty much am failing my fall goals.
I have this desire to eat soup like every meal (the cold will do that).
I need to get my eyebrows waxed.
I am working on doing "nothing" and just being content.
I failed at the fasting challenge twice.
I ate my first black and white cookie - it's lovely!  (Thanks Seinfeld).
Around here...
Election day came and went uneventfully voting absentee will do that.
Winter is coming.
Someone dressed up like a turkey for wheeler's soon to be released music videos.
The Indy Blues newly redesigned website just dropped - check it.
We baby sat for our pastor's little ginger boys (as we call them).
Discussing Dustin taking a part time job to help our friends new business.

Around here...
We're discussing what we want to do in terms of getting married.
Really we're discussing what we don't want to do.
We started using google video chat to talk thru the week.  It makes
My mom is ecstatic about the Dust + Katie engagement (it's adorable really).
Around here...
Life is full.
Love is plentiful.
Thankfulness is immeasurable.
And God is great.

The Chinese

A few weeks ago some Chinese exchange students came to visit us in Indianapolis.  We took them around town to see see the monument, and art museum and mall, and race track and cooked them American Breakfast and took them out for Mexican.  It was so much fun teaching them about American things.  We taught them how to play Pictionary even if their english made them think a pond was a pony.  And we taught them about pixie sticks and race cars.  It was a great time and we can't wait to see them again soon.    Anyhow I never got around to blogging about it until just now so here are some snaps from their visit.  They actually took probably 10X as many photos as me but I love some of these snaps they are pretty awesome.

Engaged

Yes that's right this past weekend Dustin proposed and I accepted.  Here's a my recap of how it went.  We went to the circle after dinner at Don Pablos as we have before my brothers and Alicia and Lo and Kathleen in tow.  Someone suggested we take a family photo under the monument - Schreve or Jono (who were in on it) and we did and after Kathleen snapped like 10.  Then my family stepped away and Dustin dropped to one knee said something like "Katie Jones I love you and I want to spend the rest of my life with you will you marry me."  I said "yes" and kissing him and then stuck my lollipop back my mouth.  My family being the social media buffs pretty much had live video footage rolling.  And circulated their videos on the family group texting while Dustin and I prayed alone and then we joined up with the crew.  I'm so glad my family was there they are a huge part of my life and I really appreciate how Dustin has embraced them and just joined the Jones and Co Crew without hesitation.   Anyhow was pretty special and I have known for some time that Dustin is the guy for me.  I truly do feel as though this is something God wanted for both of us from our first real meeting.
As for when we are getting married and other wedding details - I never really dreamed of a wedding - it's not that I never thought I would get married it's more that I like for everyday moments to be special so I never really wanted a big dress or a special party.  What I do know about our wedding is it will only be the start of many great days Dust and I will have together.   I want to try and get my friends and family engaged in both the planning and ceremony and party because well it just seems like the thing to do. Stay tuned I'm sure you'll be reading more about it here on my blog.
The ring is very sparkly and beautiful.  It's so odd to wear it because I never really was one to wear jewelery unless you count my hair tie.   But you know I took it off earlier because it really needs to be sized and put it in my purse and like 10 minutes later I had a mini panic attack when I realized it wasn't on my finger - so I put it back on.

A Week Home

I got to spend an entire week at home last week and I totally loved it.  I enjoyed it to the fullest I spent some time with some of my favorite people so it was extra awesome.  There's also that perk of work from home and living in my own house.  I worked on two different quilts.  I spent some time with Jono who's moving soon.  Dust and I had quality time together.  I got to go to a picnic, play "golf", see some friends get hitched.  And here's some snaps from my week at home.

Date on the Street

Last night a group of my friends and I got together for what I like to call "date on the street". The girls and I had been talking about doing this since back in April but we could never make it happen. And now that we are all dating lovely gentlemen who want to join us on our ridiculous adventures it made it that much more magical. We basically packed up a picnic, fine china, silver and sparkling grape juice and set-up a table and chairs below the monument.   And although the guys were apprehensive at first even they were excited to make plans to do it again soon.  They particularly enjoyed the hysterical evening entertainment which danced by in a afghan (which we could not have planned).  It was beautiful, fun and magical.  I also just want to say how much I love this group of friends they are always down for whatever and we so enjoy each others company.  I'm so blessed to have them in our lives.

The Color Run

A few weeks ago I "ran" in the color run.  It was such a fun time albeit very messy.  We got a pretty decent sized team together to run.  I had planned to run the whole thing however my congestion and allergies seem to have just worsened this summer so I ran part and walked part.  Turns out that's fine because the majority of the people aren't really running.  We started out the mornign all matchy matchy in white t's.  But as you run you get covered in color (which may get in your eyes - ick).  We ended up looking like blue smurfs of something.  Thank goodness the heat broke and it wasn't 100 degrees that morning as well.  Thanks for inviting me Amy let's do another run together sometime.
Jono and I before.

The girls getting their stretching on.

This is for the end.  I used mine in the beginning because I didn't want to carry it.

After shot - A bunch of Smurfs.

Dan looking pretty blue.

Jono looking a mess.

Amy all blue.

Jono just got hit with color by Dan.

Our feet post run.

The after shot taken in the same place as the before.

Here I am with my newest pal patrick.

It was a good time.  However was the color run worth $25 or whatever we paid?  Perhaps however I'm not 100% sold on doing it again next summer.
