19 Stars: Quilts of Indiana's Past and Present

I had the opportunity to do a little sneak peek of the 19 Stars: Quilts of Indiana’s Present and Past at the Indiana State Museum this last weekend.  I took Jonesy with me because Babies Love Quilts yes?

Anyhow the exhibit is part of Indiana’s Bicentennial celebration (did you know Indiana will be 200 next year?).   It features vintage quilts as well as contemporary (sadly no Indianapolis Modern Quilt Guild members had quilts in the exhibit).  The exhibit features 19 stars as Indiana was the 19th State of the Union.

Let’s start first with the contemporary side of the exhibit – these quilts while they are masterpieces in their own right.  Surprisingly most of these were not my cup of tea.  I prefer quilts that can be functional in my home rather than hung solely on a wall.   Many of these were what I would call art quilts with very intricate piecing and unique fabrics and detailed quilting.  Regardless they were still beautiful and you can appreciate the craftsmanship and artistic ability of their creators.   Here are a few snaps I captured of the Contemporary  Side of the exhibit.

The vintage quilts however were amazing!  I was surprised at how much I was drawn to the Vintage pieces.  I could see similarities to these quilts and quilts shown at show and tell and IMQG Meetings.  A few of them I said to myself  “Rachael will want to hack this” (Rachael being an IMQG member who often likes to hack patterns).  They were beautiful, intricately pieced, many by hand.  And they are persevered so beautifully that you can’t really tell they are 100+ years old.    Anyhow here are some snaps from the Vintage side of the exhibit.

Check out this feathering?  And quilting.  Holy Cow!

 Ombre Anyone?
And what about some of these vintage prints?

Shout out for Indy Modern Quilt Guild - Indiana State Museum if you want to have an exhibit of AMAZING Indiana Modern quilts anytime soon get in touch – I know so people. LOL.

The exhibit is on the 3rd floor of the Indiana State Museum and is included with museum admission.  I think admission $12 or $13/person (Jones sized babies are free) but the first Tuesday of the Month is ½ Price if you are a deal finder.  It’s also worth taking a peek at the Bill Foley Exhibit which I also loved.

West Baden Springs Resort

Back in November we took a trip to West Baden Springs Resort - I had been wanting to stay there for a while and so we made it happen.  Sadly we missed all the leaves.  But it was still a fun trip.  The hotel is pretty amazing for something tucked away in nowhere land Indiana.
#babyburf as usual was thrilled to be someplace new and seeing things.  We took him swimming in their massive pools which he enjoyed.  It was a little expensive it still a nice way to spend family time after Dusty completing three weeks on call.

Au revoir Rendezvous - Hello Civic

So the Rendezvous aka Lou aka the Tank started having transmission problems. And when i took it in to be looked at my mechanic was like "yo girl I cannot put a transmission in this" - okay so he didn't say "yo" but basically it wasn't worth it to fix up Lou.  It was kind of a sad day for me.  Despite Lou's aging self with his gas guzzling ways, a lack of sunroof opening, and gas gauge that stopped working two years ago.  I loved that tank.  I loved having 7 extra seats and giant mirrors.  I drove it for 5+ years it had over 150,000 miles on it.  It was a good car.  And I probably most of all will miss NO car payment.  But all good things must end.
So I went car shopping I had my heart set on a nice newer but not brand new station wagon - like a Volvo or Subaru one with a third seat if it could be found.  Well I found one actually two however at the last minute I was like 'maybe not' so I thought it over.  And at the last second I went with a Honda Civic that get's 35-40 mpg instead and it's more affordable.  Surprisingly while I miss the tank - I already like having the Civic and it's gas efficient ways.

Indianapolis - B's Po Boy

Jono, Lo and I went to B's Po Boy the other night for dinner. It's a new place in Fountain Square near some of our other favorite spots and naturally it's convenient to the bungalow. They have Bocce ball there too however we did not plan since it was like 100 and we were kinda drained from the sun already. The atmosphere is very cool  I love the paneled wall and lack of plates.  But we did enjoy some Po Boy sandwiches. I had the BBQ and sweet potato fries which were both very good. Jono also got the gumbo which I tried and it was REALLY yummy great flavor. We would have liked it better sans rice but we just like this spicey.  I got D a BBQ shrimp Po Boy to go and he loved it.  He commented on how excellent the bread was even though he was eating his sandwich like an hour after it was made.  We'll go back again for sure.

Best of Life Videos 2012 - Starting Something January 2012

When I went to make this I realized I only had 4 videos from January all taken the exact same day - whoops.  So I decided to mix in some photos too as I actually have taken a photo a day for the entire month (thanks iPhone).  And so a new concept for 2012 videos was taken from that.

As I mentioned before I spent almost the entire month in Indy sleeping in my own bed, hanging in my own hood, being in my city and it was awesome - perhaps I'll get to do more of that in 2012.  But because of that lots of my photographs are from everyday life.  Anyhow - song is from Michael Jackson - Gonna be Starting something - sorta have a music crush on almost all MJ songs I'm not afraid to admit.  Anyhow enjoy.

Hiking with Momo Adventures #1 - Cultural Trail

This is an art installation and the solar panels collect energy to light this up during the night.
So last weekend we did hike #1 for the monthly hiking with momo adventures (#22 on Da List).  Since it was January and weather in Indiana could be a foot of snow or sunny and 55 I thought it best to do a paved trail.  So we hiked Indianapolis cultural trail.  For those of you that don't know what this is it's a trail that connects all the cultural districts in Indianapolis to each other with bike/walking/handicapped accessible paths all built with green products and there are art installations along the way.  It's actually probably one of the coolest urban things happening in Indy, and they are still building it.  It has a part that is pretty near me that is still under construction but maybe soon I will be able to bike into Indy without feeling like I will be killed by a semi on the roads.
We walked from the War Memorial along Alabama - which isn't far but it was chilly so it was far enough for Momo.  I invited my friend Busyao to join us and I think she had fun.  It was a beautiful day for a hike despite the chill.  Anyhow enjoy the photos.
Starting point. They haven't changed the War Memorial Plaza much for the trail.

All the intersections have painted lanes.

More of the  texture of the path.

Mosaic at the Murat Theater it's awesomesauce.

That mural on the wall there is one of the 46 mural's painted for SuperBowl 46.  I'm going to tour them all soon.

Our feet on the trail.

Love the hexagon pavers - good call city planners.
