Good Things!

So here are a few of the treasures that came home to bungalow bill.
All kinds of crazy zippers some were even from the 60s too fun.
Needle collections - some were my mom's growing up.
Thread.
This little jem - isn't this spectacular? Not the fastener but this silly little candy jar? too funny.
Special fabrics like these - I love this bird one.
And more sexy fabric you know you want to have your very own stash of pasiley courdory. Oh and check out that cool label that says "hand knit by muriel kelly" - my great grandma used to label her knitting.
Grandpa you were so right these things were right up my alley I cannot wait to make something. Grandma thanks for sharing your stash I have already sorted my goodies into my stash for some crafty goodness.

Tuesday 10 - Ode to the Weekend & Grands & Collections

I spent the weekend in DC packing my grandparent's for their trip to California (Hi Grandpa!), additionally we moved some items into storage and helped them clean out their bedroom. We made trip after trip to the storage facility, dusted, vacuumed, ran errands, chatted with the grands all that good stuff.
My Kelly grandparents are collectors. Collectors of all sorts of beautiful and interesting things. They have collections of yarn, baskets, matchbooks, ties, musical instruments, canes, records, family mementos - I could go on but I won't. And you know what is awesome about their collections - they don't just collect something to have it, they learn, research, and enjoy these treasures. There's a story to go with each one. It's awesome. Unfortunately people these days probably don't truly appreciate true collectors, but after some reflection I decided it's way cool. Anyhow it was a good weekend and this week's Tuesday 10 (yes that's right it's Tuesday again) is all about loveliness from the weekend.

1. Short Buses - seems like every where we went we saw the short buses on the ride home JJ and snapped some photos of them. I'm not sure what kind of an omen that is but I found in peculiar

2. Grandpa's Baritone Horn - Something to note however Grandpa did not play this horn he was a tuba player. Oh and before that he played the harmonica - Joe perhaps you and grandpa should play a little number together.
3. Woodward & Lothrop Treasures we found them everywhere - Grandma you should really start that museum.
4. Tie Collections - Some probably from Woodys. Did you know that my grandparents used to make ties among other things.
5. Probably the super coolest of all the collections I found - the Picture Matchbooks. These photos do not do it justice, they really are very pretty . One of my most favorite things about this collection is that many of these matchbooks came from hotels that my great great great grandparents lived in or visited.
Like this one seems they lived in the Flamingo in Chicago. I think perhaps it would be fun next time we're in Chi-town to go to all the old Kelly family hotspots - grandpa you should make a list of all those places you used to visit.

6. Grandma's Baskets - outside of a store I have never seen so many baskets and so many different kinds.

7. This sign was hilarious to me. If you look carefully you will see another short bus?
8. Grandpa's got Moxie - oh and his boss thinks so too! Apparently his boss gave him this bottle of moxie once -it's about 1/3 evaporated, moxie is a disgusting soda and I bet this one is especially nasty. Grandpa told us some stories of his days of drinking and conversing and they were such fun.
9. The vintage flooring - can you say nifty?
10. Last but not least - The return of the wagon! Oh I had missed it - what a treasure this is to drive and ride in. I'm oh so blessed that Esti let's me roll in her. She's ever so lovely I wanted to just drive her on home.

I came home with some treasures too - although I did not photograph them I will save that for another post. Tonight we are having Stephens Modified Chili Recipe because fall has arrived in Indy and it seems so appropriate, we also have to remember to take out the recycling it's out of control (we forgot last week), and I need to cover my tomatoes we might get frost and I can't have my not ripe tomatoes ruined however would I make that salsa. Safe travels G&G.

Meatloaf

so I've never really been a big fan of any kind of loaf. But Sunday there I was with ground sirloin on the counter and didn't really know what to cook for supper - so I made some meatloaf. Which I must say is better off when eaten on sandwiches the next day, and the next and still the next - if you didn't know I'm eating leftover meatloaf sandwich right now and I think 3 day old meatloaf is actually better than fresh from the oven. But that is besides the point.
So I was trying to think on what might actually improve meatloaf and make it more appealing? I thought bacon and/or cheese or maybe even some kind of veggie like broccoli or asparagus? Can you cook broccoli in meat? I don't even know. So I googled some recipes and I found this one, which I think I would modify to become this...

Jones Compound Mmmm Mmmm Meatloaf
  • 1/2 pound ground sirlion
  • 1/2 (12 ounce) package bulk pork breakfast sausage
  • 1/2 red onion, chopped
  • 1/2 green pepper seeded & chopped
  • 1 tablespoons barbecue sauce
  • 1 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup instant oatmeal
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1/2 tsp chilli pepper flakes
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp cumin
  • 1 tsp parsley fresh or flakes
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese
  • 4 strips bacon
  • 1 tblsp Ketchup (of the Heniz Variety)

DIRECTIONS

  1. Preheat an oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
  2. Mix the meat, garlic, onion, barbecue sauce, Worcestershire sauce, egg, oatmeal, spices, and Cheddar cheese together in a large bowl until evenly mixed. Form into a loaf and place in a loafsized baking dish. Lie the bacon strips across the top of the meatloaf. (I perhaps would like to cook the bacon in the meatloaf but that might not cook? )
  3. Bake in the preheated oven until no longer pink in the center, about 1 hour. An instant-read thermometer inserted into the center should read at least 160 degrees F (70 degrees C).
  4. Spread ketchup evenly on top and cook 10 more minutes (meatloaf should not be "crispy")
  5. Serve with asparagus and garlic mashed potatoes.
I did not find any recipes that involved cooking your meatloaf with your veggies aside from green peppers so perhaps they are better off left on the side, unless you have better ideas?

2 Parking Tickets Later & Tuesday 10

I got a parking ticket last week when downtown and I got another one today! How is it that are right on the meters like that it could not have been expired more than 1 minute when I returned to the car. Someone should remind me that parking in the garage is $1.50 for 3 hours next time and I will avoid paying a $20 fine, this is my second one in two weeks so technically that's $40 - UGH! I did however pick up my new glasses. Anyhow here's my tuesday 10...

1. 1/2 off at GW this weekend we scored some more frames for our photo wall like 32 for $20 (if I hadn't had those parking tickets maybe we would have 64).

9. Jonathan concocting good eats. We love to have him cook.
10. Red Sunglasses
Now I must get off to do the dishes perhaps we should start the evening with party shots.

Biking on the White River

Another summer is ending activity down - btw jono the white river greenway is longer than you think it runs on both sides of the river. Oh and here's my favorite part - it was a perfect day for biking and there were like 10 people on the path - fall creek or the monon would have been packed. Make a mental note...

Another one of my favorite things about being in Indy... This was rush hour traffic 5:30 downtown - right across from the state house. Top that!
And as promised look what I grew. There are 9 of them and perhaps another 3 that might come in yet. I can't wait until they are ripe.

Happy Birthday Kelli!

Happy Happy Birthday to my adorable friend Kelli! And because you like cookies not cake...
Hope your day was wonderful, even if you are moving up to the north north northside (UGH!). ;)
