Totally Rad 1980s Going away Party

So in like two weeks Kathleen is moving back to Bowling Green for grad school.  We are super sad to say the least.  So we threw Kathleen a 1980s themed picnic. We had a spread of 1980s foods -  manwich, twinkies, fruit rollups, Mac and cheese and cool ranch Doritos.  Oh and Capri Suns to drink.  

We dressed up in 1989s costumes including baby jones (don't all babies need sweat bands).  Not too many people wore costumes but you know we we did - Kathleen went for late 1980s Denise Huxtable from the cosbys while I was 1980s workout.  

We also gave party favors of cassette tapes with Kathleen's picture in them.  They were a big hit despite nobody having a cassette player.  

It was a good party thanks to everyone who came. 

 

White Trash Activity - WWE Live

This weekend we went on a mini road trip to fulfill our white trash activity of the year (sorry I am not trying to offend anyone with this statement it's just what we call these yearly events).  This year we selected professional wrestling as the event.  And it was quite the show.  We let Dustin buy the tickets and thus we got floor seats and it was also Kathleen's 25 birthday event so win win (#19 on the list).

We kicked off the event with a little BBQ at a place called Scotty Bubs BubbAQue or something like that.  The locals were very welcoming to us there and we had "fried corn" for the first time.  It wasn't my most favorite but the BBQ was good and they had Jeff Foxworthy on the wall.

Dustin's buddy Logan even got to meet us there.  

Then we headed to the Freedom Hall for the big event - WWE Live!  (ps we showed up knowing 2 wrestler names and none of us had seen wrestling easily since 10+ years ago).  Oh and I should also mention Kathleen and I had customized our very own wrestling shirts with supplies from my studio and goodwill $2 shirts they were very fashionable especially derby week in Louisville.  Nothing says awesome like some fringe.

The wrestling was hilarious!  From annoucing of wrestlers to seeing just how staged it is.  Oh and don't get me started on the cute little kids with their plastic gold belts and sweat bands screaming while standing on their chairs for their favorite picks.  My other personal favorite part was the "main event" tag team where the most popular wrestler let his tag team members get "all beat up" then he tagged in and two seconds later he had whooped up on all three of the other teams guys.

Anyhow I can now cross this off my list of things I never really wanted todo but did. ;)  and this might have even been my favorite activity outside the Demolition Derby it's way more fun than SuperCross and Monster Trucks and even the Rodeo.

Glamour Shots

We had a little throwback Thursday and we did glamour shots - inspired by a photo Kathleen saw at her grandmas.  We of course knew we should do our own since we didn't back in 1994.   I had many issues getting my hair teased without a comb and because it just wanted to fall straight but we made it into a bob and that seemed best.  We used things we had around the house as props including roses Dustin cut us from the garden.  They turned out pretty hilarious we have a little bit of a drag queen look to us.  But it was hilarious and fun. Anyhow enjoy the shots.

Movie - The Great Gatsby

I hadn't been to the movies in ages but I am a sucker for period movies and movies written from books.  So I took myself to see the new gatsby.  Which I must say I enjoyed thoroughly even at the $19 price tag to see it in NYC.  I enjoyed Toby McGuire especially as well as myrtle and Jordan characters even though they were smaller parts.  My only complaint was the party scenes might have been a bit much - but I did love how the blended in new music with the 20s jazz and the camera work was very interesting.  Anyhow it was a good movie worth a trip to the theater for and now I am waiting on my invitation to a party in east egg.

Let's Get Married - Wedding Mad Libs, Crosswords, and Word Jumbles

Since there was a small break between the wedding and the reception while we got pictures taken in the chapel. I thought it would be fun to have some puzzles for people on the tables. This would give people something to do while waiting.  They were a huge hit and several people told me that they were a little HARD - but whatever it's not a challenge.  I created both the crossword and the word jumble with a free tool online (sorry I can't find the right link but I'm pretty sure I google crossword creater)  with them created I just copied it into Visio to manipulate the text to match out "wedding fonts".  I created the Wedding Mad Lib by taking our story and removing words adding the appropriate lable below a line and shortening it up a bit.  Some people left us their mad libs and they were quite hilarious.  Anyhow again I would have probably made less than 1/person of these and done like 3-4 of these per table if I did it again but I love these and I have some extras set aside maybe some day our kids can do them.   Thanks to my momo for sharpening all those pencils for this project too.

#9 Goodbye Party/Glow golf

As I looked over my 52 list.  I realized I've been making better progress this year so far than I thought - #9 Goodbye Party for Jono and Lo was completed weeks ago.    The week before Jono moved we made a family day to send Jono and Lo off.  We bought some Groupons which made glow golf like 70% off and then we headed downtown for some family glow golf.  Dustin hailed the best golfer and also won the football throwing challenge and beat Joe at air hockey (clearly making him the day's champion).  We followed up with California pizza kitchen because it was close and is relatively affordable.  In hindsight I wish I had snapped a family photo before he moved but he'll be back for our wedding so we'll just wait until then. 

Jono and I also had our own personnel party where we went around Indy to eat at Jono's favorite places.  We started out with the Tres Leche cake at Barcelona Tapas, and then followed that with fish and chips from Chatham Tap - we attempted to go to 45 for sushi as well but they weren't open yet so instead we hit the batting cages at the Bat Cave together where we hit baseballs for around 30 minutes quickly realizing you need gloves and a bat for this activity. But it was a good way to spend time together.

$5 date night

So in our efforts to keep saving for the wedding we did $5 date night this weekend. 5 dollar date night is where you can only spend $5 on you date. Armed with each of us bringing $2.50 we set off. Dustin tried to trick me with a detour way to Walmart but we still ended up there once there we decided yes we should spend the $5 on someone else. Inspired when we saw balloons we knew what we should get. We bought two packages of balloons, a table cloth, tape, and a car window marker. We blew the balloons up in the car and transported them to our friends doorway in a bag. We then taped up the table cloth filled the doorway with balloons and sealed it up with tape. I thought for sure she was going to hear us but not even when we knocked and ran off. So we left them for the next morning. When she got the surprise going to work! Hah! It was such fun.

Oh yeah Halloween Happened

Let me preface this by saying its crazy how the hurricane last week impacted work and the lives of people in NY and NJ.  Commute times for my co-workers this week have been sometimes double and triple and at least 10 or so of the 30+ project team members still didn't have power most of this week.  While I was busy basking in my enjoyment working from my night comfortable home.  They however were crippled by lack of transport, waiting in lines to siphon gas to refuel their cars,  hauling water up 13 flights in their high rise apartments and arguing with people over who gets the last loaf of bread.  Let's not even start on those less fortunate than them.  Much of my time in prayer this week has been focused on them, but it's been a real reminder of how blessed I am but as well how fragile that balance is as well. 
But I also go to the Halloween party at my friends Erica and Artie house.  On Monday Kathleen and I devised a plan to be Dustin and his best friend Jake.  We made our Halloween costumes from things found in the house - including our cardboard cut-out props.  it was well worth the "10 minutes" of effort because the second we walked in the door everyone knew who we were.  It was totally hilarious.  I love that Kathleen agreed to accompany me when Dustin had school and of course she went full out with her Dustin Costume and nailed it to the "as is tradition".  As always we had a blast.
